Gnomepal

by Johnny on April 4, 2008

Last night I had a good conversation with Chris Pirillo about a new project called Gnomepal. Chris has made a call for action and I for one am going to try my best to heed that call. I agree with Adam that a Fork is not the way to go and that we need to take advantage of the awesome Drupal developer community to really get this project together. I think Hans hits it on the head when it comes to Styling and themes in his post about the project. We must take into account the full featured set when designing if it looks good on a plain jane install great but it has to look as good with all features turned on. As well the summer of code is a great place to get MUCH traction.

Here are some of the key concepts.

  • integration with OpenSocial, OAuth, and OpenID
  • have at heart the Bill of Rights for users of the Social Web
  • Conversation Watching
  • Discovery
  • Relationships
  • Attention Matching … I took this one out a bit from original “match shared affinities”
  • I would add that the under pinning Semantic structures need to be defined and easy to implement. I am assuming a folksonomy based (TAGS) structure is the basis for categorization. With that in mind we need to look closely at how we implement Taxonomy modules

“This module will be abandoned in favor of Community Tags module with Drupal version 6.x. Please be sure to check out Community Tags before you decide to go with Taxonomy User.”

I did a little Seesmic video on this project:

Well I am going back to dig in to the road map again and add some things to that document.

I am very jazzed about this and encourage anyone with an interest to check it out.
